About the Caribbean
Caribbean islands are an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea (Atlantic Ocean). Caribbean region includes the Caribbean Sea, Caribbean Islands and adjacent coasts. The islands are located southeast of Northern America, east of Central America and north and west of South America.
Archipelago is composed of the following islands:
- Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) and Puerto Rico).
- Lesser Antilles (Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, St. Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Antigua, Redondo, Montserrat, Guadaloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenadines , Grenada, Trinidad, Tobago, Margarita, Tortuga).
The islands starts from Florida (U.S.) and ended near Venezuela.
Initially Caribbean islands belong to Spain, but because of the weak interest in them (especially the small Antilles) were soon conquered by England, France and the Netherlands. They become starting point for new achievements in the field.
The region was named the Caribbean – Indian nations with a common language and culture, which inhabited the islands before they were discovered by Europeans.
In 1492 seafarers from the expedition of Christopher Columbus were the first Europeans reached the Bahamas. By the end of his life, Christopher Columbus was convinced that he has reached Asia, so called West Indies region, and the local population – IndiansĀ (“indios ” in Spanish, the same word which means “Indians”).
